Palo Alto, CA – April 22, 2013 – A new study from the Radicati Group provides key data and statistics on business and consumer use of Email, Instant Messaging (IM), Social Networking, Mobile Email, and Mobile IM. It includes data on the number of business and consumer users and accounts broken out by region for North America, Europe, Asia/Pacific and Rest of World (RoW). It also provides user demographics, installed base of on-premises vs. cloud-based accounts, breakouts by business size, vertical industry, email traffic volumes, email storage data, and spam and malware attacks. The report also includes data on the amount of time business and consumer users spend daily on email, instant messaging, and social networking.

According to the report, the number of worldwide email accounts is expected to increase from over 3.9 billion accounts in 2013 to over 4.9 billion by year-end 2017. However, business and consumer communication is also shifting increasingly to Social Networking, Instant Messaging (IM), and Mobile IM.

Social Networking will show strong growth over the next four years in both Business and Consumer markets, growing from about 3.2 billion accounts in 2013 to over 4.8 billion accounts by the end of 2017.
