Facebook Releases New Messenger App

Facebook released its new Facebook Messenger App for smartphones. The app competes directly with established mobile messenger BlackBerry Messenger (BBM), and offers much of the same functionality found in BBM, which makes it a fairly redundant app (should we say useless?). Facebook would be much better served by offering Facebook Messenger as part of its mobile Facebook application instead of presenting it as a separate app. There’s no x-factor in Facebook Messenger that will draw users away from BBM, nor are there any killer features that will ensure traction amongst Facebook’s own users. The ability to tag photos and location is nifty, but with the mobile messenger market already saturated by market leader BlackBerry and up-and-coming Kik, as well as IM Aggregators with mobile apps like Meebo, eBuddy, and Trillian, Facebook Messenger needs to bring more to the table than just its brand and simple messenger capabilities.
