Instant Messaging

RIM's BlackBerry is a must-have solution for most wireless carriers. Over 160 carriers worldwide offer the BlackBerry, giving RIM a powerful presence in the wireless e-mail market.

We expect to see continued growth in IM use with the number of IM accounts growing from 995 million in 2006, to over 1.6 billion in 2010.

The number of IM users is also expected to grow from 432 million in 2006, to 650 million in 2010.

Public IM continues to dominate IM traffic through 2010. Yet, as the EIM market grows, IM traffic on enterprise networks will represent an increasingly larger portion of total IM messages sent.

We forecast EIM traffic to grow from 2.1 billion messages per day in 2006, to 10.7 billion messages per day in 2010, while Public IM traffic will grow from 15.7 billion messages per day in 2006, to 55.7 billion messages per day in 2010.

We expect that Consumer Hosted E-mail services will help to drive growth in this market, particularly in China, Japan and South Korea. Wireless carriers in these countries have started to invest more heavily in wireless e-mail technology and projected growth from 2% in 2006 to 9.8% in 2010.
